Looking at the whole clinical picture

An internal medicine consultation brings together your symptoms, long-term conditions, examination findings, medicines and test results. The aim is a practical plan that considers how these factors affect one another rather than treating each laboratory number in isolation.

Reasons to arrange an assessment

The center’s published services include review of diabetes, high blood pressure and lipid disorders; anaemia; unexplained tiredness or weight loss; fever and general symptoms; medicine use and possible interactions; and assessment before selected procedures when needed. The appropriate investigations depend on the symptoms and examination.

What to bring

Bring a list of diagnoses, recent and older relevant blood tests, any hospital discharge summaries, and all medicines and supplements with their doses. If you record blood pressure or glucose readings at home, bring the record and explain how the measurements were taken. Include any allergies and previous reactions to medicines.

During and after your consultation

Discuss the symptoms that matter most to you and any practical problems with treatment. The clinician may recommend additional tests, an adjustment to the management plan, monitoring or referral. Ask when results should be reviewed and which symptoms should prompt an earlier return. Do not change prescribed treatment based on general website information.

When not to wait for a routine appointment

Chest pain, new severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, severe bleeding or sudden severe illness need urgent assessment. Go to the nearest emergency department rather than waiting for the center to reply to an appointment request.
