Know the cause. Understand the stage. Plan the follow-up.

Liver care is more than checking whether an enzyme result is high. We assess the possible cause, the condition of the liver, associated illnesses and the risk of complications. Your plan may include blood tests, imaging, assessment of fibrosis, treatment or monitoring, depending on the findings and availability.

Reasons to seek a liver assessment

These include unexplained liver test abnormalities, fatty liver seen on imaging, hepatitis B or C infection, jaundice, known cirrhosis, fluid accumulation, portal hypertension, concerns about medicine or supplement-related liver injury, and follow-up of a previously identified liver condition. Normal enzymes alone cannot establish that the liver is free of significant disease.

A plan tailored to your diagnosis

The discussion may cover treatment of the underlying cause, medicines and vaccination history, weight and metabolic health, nutrition and muscle strength, and monitoring for complications. Selected patients need surveillance for liver cancer or referral to a specialist center. There is no single test schedule that fits every patient.

What to bring and when to seek urgent help

Bring previous blood tests, imaging, viral hepatitis results, procedure reports and a list of medicines and supplements. Vomiting blood, new confusion, fever with jaundice, severe abdominal pain or fever in a patient with ascites need urgent assessment rather than a routine appointment.
