Before you agree to the procedure

Ask which problem ERCP is intended to treat, what the alternatives are and whether more imaging is needed first. The ERCP service page explains its clinical role and important risks. This checklist helps you prepare for the individual discussion; it is not a substitute for consent or a personalised preparation sheet.

Your preparation checklist

Bring recent blood results, imaging, operation notes and any previous ERCP report. Include the date and type of an existing stent if known. Tell the team about allergies, pregnancy, anticoagulants, diabetes treatment and important heart, lung or kidney conditions. Follow the fasting and medicine instructions provided for your appointment rather than applying a generic online schedule.

Questions worth asking

What treatment is planned? What complications are most relevant to my case? What sedation or anaesthesia will be used? Could another procedure or admission be needed? Who should accompany me, and what restrictions apply after discharge?

Before you leave

Ask for an explanation of the findings and treatment, the plan for any samples, instructions about food and medicines, and an emergency contact route. If a stent has been placed, record its purpose and the review, removal or replacement plan. Keep this information with your medical records and take it to future appointments.

Recovery and warning signs

Follow the discharge instructions, including advice about a companion, driving and activity after sedation. Severe or increasing pain, fever, vomiting blood, significant bleeding, breathing difficulty or collapse requires urgent assessment. Do not wait for a WhatsApp appointment reply.
